My Semester

Hello mother, my semester went pretty well for the most part. I managed to show up for every single class because once I tend to start slacking it becomes a slippery slide to finishing off the semester. I also studied pretty hard and did all of my homework. I wouldn’t have done anything differently because I gave everything my all. In ten years I will remember that it is unpleasent to go to work and school all the time. I hope I will forget the self defense manikin near the doorway because I don’t like the way he looks at me.

Peer Reviews

When I read the papers of others I was impressed with how well they turned out. For the most part I found few mistakes and they seemed like solid essays. I got some decent feedback from my peers. I kind of wish they were more critical as I don’t think I really deserved the good scores. I found a couple of things that needed work like the grammer and word usage in my paper. I think the feedback from the professional was more helpful than the peer reviews because they are more credible than college students. I was satisfied with the information I got from the MCL tutor.

Writing My First Draft

I think this was a very demanding research paper that took a lot of time and thought. I spent a lot of time outside of class on this and I think my work paid off. It took me a few days to get started. Once I felt that I had compiled enough information, I went along and worked on the paper for an hour a day for about a week. I didn’t really feel dramitically bound to my topic of global warming warming and factories, but I found it to be somewhat interesting. I ended up going in a different direction than my outline. Once I started writing in detail I realized that some things needed to be deleted or changed. I went to the Murphy Oil factory and conducted an interview, which was all right. I’m pretty happy with were my paper went and I think it is a solid essay.

Community Partner

My community partner for this project will be a Murphy Oil representative. I have arranged an interview on Tuesday with Gary Anderson who, I was told, is a manager. The contact phone number is 715-398-7256. We have agreed to have a short interview at 1PM. Five questions: What problems does the Murphy Oil plant face as far as toxic output goes? What sort of things does the government regulate the most? What sort of penalties does the government impose on an environmental risk violation? What’s being done right now to help the environment eg. energy saving, reducing emissions? What things are Murphy Oil possibly looking to do in the future to lower toxic output into the environment? I hope to get a good bit of information in a short amount of time. It would be nice if he could arrange a tour for me of the plant.

#15 Research Progress

I would say I have completed a substantial portion of my bibliography. My topic hasn’t really changed and I think it is a good one because it’s very accessable and provides a great deal of interestion information. My topic is probably overdone a lot and that is probably the weak point. I have found a few interesting articles; primarily the sources of fuel and energy that they are researching right now was interesting. There are a lot of things being done that I haven’t heard about so for me it’s kind of interesting.

My Topic: Local Counter-Global Warming Strategies

What strategies or measures have Duluth locals taken in an effort to combat or slow global warming? A good place to start as far as people I can interview would be someone from the local factories, since these facilities are the ones pushed the hardest to lower toxic output. Another person I could interview would be a professor or an activist who is involved in or very knowledgable of the problems and the solutions with global warming. I really would hate to do any community service that I wouldn’t be getting paid for but if it came down to it, I would try to find something both fun and important to do for our mother earth.

Marriage Ammendment

I found the political cartoon on page 254 to be of some interest. It was titled, “A Brief History of Marriage in America. It pretty much gave the face of American notables who each, through time, had his own view of what marriage stood for. Ben Franklin’s depiction of marriage was between a man and a chattel, whatever that is. The Kentucky Fried Chicken man described marriage as a bond between two white people. Ronald Reagan’s interpretation was that it was a sacred bond between two people of the same skin color. They then end the cartoon with George W. Bush trying to pass an ammendment stating that marriage is a sacred bond between a heterosexual man and a heterosexual women. These representations show us that visions of what marriage is, as well as what people’s values are can change over time.

Spring Break

Spring break was the best time of my life. I played Mario Galaxy and watched golf on TV. I have never had so much fun. I worked almost everyday this week as well, to help pay for things. I would never have passed this positive experience up for anything. I’m going to come back to school refreshed and ready after my spring break.

Chapter 5 Quotes

Citing and documenting our sources also moves the work in our respective disciplines forward (Berndt and Muse 171). I found this quote to be somewhat interesting because it highlights the importance of citing sources which is generally overlooked and unliked. Citing sources can be important because they can encourage the writer to be more accurate with facts in the essay. To get these people to take a pamphlet or examine a poster, writers must grab their attention (Berndt and Muse 191). I found this quote interesting because posters and pamphlets can be other forms of writing. They can be colorful and should get the message across in a brief manner, because people are often just walking by.

To Tell the Truth

For me it was kind of hard to tell which one was telling the truth. Becky seemed like the most unsure of how to answer the questions, which was a hint that she wasn’t telling the truth. The biggest piece of information obtained that Becky wasn’t telling the truth was when she said, “my mom gets her income from babysitting my aunt’s kids.” This is a difficult way of drawing in an income. I thought Chandra did a good job with her responses because I couldn’t tell which one was lying. She did have kind of elaborate responses though, such as they each had different methods of waking up. Mallory seemed like she was telling the truth also, which she was. I think when people asked about what her parents did for a living, her response, “my father is a computer transcriptionist and my mother was unemployed,” was a pretty realistic response to what kind of job a deaf person can actually have.
