Meeting Minutes 6/30/09

Members present: Cliff Koski, Deanne Roquet, Julius Salinas, Diane Morin, Britt Johnson.

Announcements

Interpretive Trail: Glenn, Dave, and Matt will be rebuilding the interpretive trail bridge and installing a sign at the top of the access trail.

Presidents Climate Commitment – Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory: Cliff reported the greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the Presidents Climate Commitment is complete and will be submitted shortly.

Old Business

President’s Council Presentation: Wade and Deanne attended the President’s Council on June 19, 2009 and discussed the activities and goals of the Environmental Council. The Schools Cutting Carbon and Presidents Climate Commitment were specifically discussed. Wade also described the after-hours equipment survey he and Kevin did of LSC (refrigerators, coffee pots, heaters, etc.)

Duty Day: Deanne and Missy are working on a contract with Deb Rowe for Duty Day. Britt reported the charging of admissions and CEU credits for guests are possible, according to Mary Nienaber. Cliff reported Kathy Nelson is requesting a list of salient points to discuss in her opening speech on Duty Day.

UMACS Workshop: Erin, Cliff, Julius, and Britt plan to attend the UMACS Climate Action Plan Workshop on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Macalester College. Britt will contact Mindy Granley regarding the use of UMD transportation. Britt will contact Missy regarding a PO for the workshop. The council voted in favor of funding four Environmental Council members to attend the UMACS Climate Action Plan Workshop on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Macalester College.

New Business

Living Green Conference: EAGLE is closing down and looking for an organization to take ownership of the Living Green Conference. Deanne will talk to Wade and Michelle LaPort about the possibility of LSC taking ownership.

Motions

The council voted in favor of funding four Environmental Council members to attend the UMACS Climate Action Plan Workshop on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at Macalester College.

Next Meeting

The next Environmental Council meeting will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 in the Workforce Development Conference Room.

Meeting Minutes 6/16/09

Members present: Cliff Koski, Deanne Roquet, Jim Drake, Britt Johnson.

Suzanne Semborski from Human Resources was also in attendance to discuss duty day.

Old Business

Schools Cutting Carbon: Deanne reported the Schools Cutting Carbon report from ERM has been received. Deanne will make the report available to others.

Environmental Council Website: Deanne met with Steve Fudally regarding the Environmental Council website. She is requesting other Environmental Council members look over the website and provide feedback.

Duty Day: Suzanne Semborski from LSC Human Resources was present to discuss details of the fall duty day.

The Environmental Council is responsible for arranging speakers and topics, and providing a written summary of each topic and schedule to Suzanne by August 1, 2009. Suzanne will do the remaining arrangements.

Deanne is still working to locate the remaining funds for Deb Rowe. Wade will work with Suzanne to put together a contract with Deb for duty day.

Cliff will contact Kathleen Nelson regarding the welcome and introduction speech.

Coffee will be served at the duty day, but no disposable cups will be provided. Employees will be asked to bring their own coffee cups. Extra coffee cups will be collected and available to employees that forget or do not have their own reusable coffee cup.

Potential schedule:

· 8:30 – 9:00 – Kathleen Nelson – Welcome and introduction to the Presidents Climate Commitment

· 9:00- 10:30 – Deb Rowe – Key Note Speech to make employees aware of the Presidents Climate Commitment, and how the greenhouse gas emissions inventory leads into the climate plan.

· 10:30 – 10:45 – Break

· 10:45 – 11:30 – Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Summary and Clicker Commuting Survey

· 11:30 – 12:30 – Lunch

· 12:30 – 3:30 – Five or six concurrent breakout sessions (Either 1 or 1.5 hours each) to engage employees here at LSC and at home to work toward the goals of the climate plan.

· TBD – Public evening session with Deb Rowe

· TBD – Deb Rowe meeting with Kathleen Nelson, Environmental Council, and others

Meeting Minutes 6/16/09

Old Business

Committee Reports

Presidents Climate Commitment: Cliff reported the LSC Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory as completed and presented an executive summary to the council. Mark Winson will review the inventory report. With Mark’s approval, the inventory will be submitted. The next step for LSC in the Presidents Climate Commitment is the climate plan.


Old Business

Sustainability Education Workshop at Northland College in Ashland, WI: Student Life will cover the cost of sending LSC student Erin Gregor to this 5-day workshop. Jane Moder will assist Erin in arranging the funding.

Duty Day: Deanne is still working to locate the remaining funds to host Deb Rowe for fall duty day. Wade will look into using FY09 remaining funds to get a contract started with Deb. Human Resources will do the scheduling for duty day, and Deanne will obtain a template schedule from Mary Nienaber. The Environmental Council is responsible to arrange the speakers and topics. Possible speakers include Deb Rowe, Rick Carter (LHB), Kate Worley (Wastewise), Dean Talbot, and Rachel Wagner.

Alliant Energy Grant: Wade will look into this grant.

New Business

PowerPoint Presentation: Wade is putting together a PowerPoint presentation of the Environmental Council efforts and accomplishments. Please contact him if you have any ideas for items to add. He will be presenting to the President’s Council on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Holiday Inn.

Workforce Development Center: Diane reported the Workforce Development Center is working on a new lecture series. Four classes are planned: Make-and-Take Rain Barrels, Sustainable Farming, Energy Efficiency in the Home, Canning and Preserving. Workforce Development is also working on a sustainability training series for commercial applications. Stimulus money may potentially fund other types of training.

Announcements

Budget status: Deanne reported printing and laminating costs of $246 ($160 + $86) from the EC budget.

Schools Cutting Carbon: Deanne reported the Kill-A-Watt project is complete. She will be submitting a report shortly.
