Ben Franklin’s virtues

I find sincerity to be a strong virtue for me. I have witnessed a great many people who are dishonest with others in their lives. That is why I try my best to be honest and sincere in my life. I have often said not to ask me a question that you may not want to know the answer to, because you will get the truth.

Humility is sometimes a hard virtue for me to follow. When I am proud of my accomplishments I want to share them with those that I know. However, I have been told I go overboard at times and it borders on bragging.

I see value in keeping track of your own behavior because it is one way that others perceive you. Consideration for others around you is always a good thing. For those that only think about themselves are usually very lonely.

Election

The first time i can remember having anything to do with an elections was 1992. I had just turned 18 in August and the presidential election was being held in 3 months. There were 3 major candidates running that year. First was Republican George H. W. Bush. For the Democrats it was Bill Clinton. Then the one i voted for H. Ross Perot, Independent. Even though Perot was the smartest guy there you knew he wasn’t going to get elected. There were too many people who said I’m a Republican, or I’m a Democrat, to actually listen to the issues and see what what was going on.

Final food for thought

Write about anything that we want to, that could be dangerous. I will keep it relatively tame. First off i want to wish everyone from the class good luck in whatever educational venture they are engaged in. You alone get to take the responsibility of steering your life in the right direction. Not everything is going to be available to you that you want, but realize that how well you deal with adversity can shape the person you are tommorrow. Lastly, I want to thank Steve for making this class fun. Not just fun, but fun to the point that most of us did not realize just how much we were learning until we took a look back with our reflection essay. Even though this class is coming to an end, I will see you on Monday to start Composition II.

Alice’s Restuarant

“They had 27, 8×10 color glossy pictures with the circles and arrows with a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us.” This quote i really liked because it goes to show how things can get blown out of proportion so easily. A simple littering violation treated like the crime of the century. Which is how it was percieved by the Sargent in the story, and what led Arlo to say “I’m sittin’ here on the group W bench because you want to know if I’m moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug.” I believe this to be his thesis statement especially because of the irony, that if you litter, you’re not moral enough to kill.

Checkmate?

This time dad decided to take off the training wheels..

One of the hardest things i think a parent has to do is teach their childeren that not everything is “given” to them. I believe this statement reflects that idea.

I think what the writer is trying to relay as his thesis is that making the right choices in life will help him to achieve the goals he sets for himself

Food for thought

“There is joy in understanding; pain in ignorance”. These words written in Steve Dalager’s story, A note to college students, can have a broad and deep meaning for many individuals. How one interprets the world around them is largely based on what they understand. A simple example would be, how well do you enjoy a joke if you don’t understand the punch line. Also, how much do you really enjoy a documentary about beetles if you have a fear of them that makes you want to have nothing to do with bugs? You may feel left out of the joke, or completely uninterested in the documentary. If that same joke was put into a context that you understand, and if you watched that documentary which had information that alleviated your fear of bugs both may be more enjoyable for you. I believe what the statement and the story are trying to convey is that knowledge is power as well as peace of mind.

True and Notso

When I was a kid I went to Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama. It was one of the most memorable experiences from my childhood.

After researching my biological family on Ancestry.com I followed my family line back to Germany and actually found distant relatives still living there. I have made contact with some of them and look forward to getting to know more about them.

The wisdom of understanding

What makes a person wise? I look at wisdom as the ability to understand your environment and being able to relate those experiences to others. My Uncle Les is the wisest person I know, in this respect. His compassion and understanding is based on his own life experiences. Though he is not a saint by any stretch of the imagination, he does offer advice and counsel to anyone that is willing to listen. Drawing from lessons learned from his own life, he has vast knowledge and skill that he is willing to share with anyone wanting to learn. Is he the smartest person I know? Most likely he isn’t.   Whether a person is wise or not is not based on how smart a person is necessarily, in my opinion, but how they empower those around them to be their best.
