With a 7 year friendship with Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Karen A. Busch received her BS and MS degrees in English and Education from Bemidji State University. Karen has been trained and licensed as a high school English teacher in Minnesota, so she has taught 7th graders through university students. As a basketball coach, she taught 5th grade and 7th grade girls to make left- handed lay ups with confidence and excitement. In college, Karen visited Duluth for the first time and said, “I want to live in this town.” In 2000, she happily accepted her dream job in her dream hometown as a full-time instructor in the English department. She brings nearly 20 years of teaching experience to the department, and the love for her job as a community college English instructor still grows a bit each semester. For the school year 2010-2011, Karen spent her full year sabbatical in Reykjavik, Iceland as a visiting writing teacher at three different schools. She’s brought some ideas from Iceland for her students in Writing II and Composition I. Recently, a math colleague stopped her in the hallway and said, “Karen, you absolutely sparkle. Iceland has been very good to you.”
